The environment can be hard on the eyes.  A combination of exposure to pollution, sunlight, dusty environments, or smoking can cause permanent changes in your eyes, making them look bloodshot and unhealthy even though you feel 100% perfect! In addition, patients may also notice a slight yellowing or brown spots on the white eyes over time.  This covers the white eyes underneath.

This is typically a 100% no-stitch, no-graft procedure.  It is typically a 15 minute procedure and you can usually resume work and your daily routine within 1-7 days. The whiter eye results are often visible within 4-6 weeks after the procedure.  As with any procedure, individual results will vary primarily due to differences in healing responses.  I-Brite^® uses a proprietary technique developed by Dr. Brian that is ONLY available at our Institute in Beverly Hills.

Patients may note a scratchy sensation for a period of days, dryness of the eyes, light sensitivity, and/or recurrence of blood vessels.  Other risks include scleral thinning and infection which are rare. We conducted a review of 552 patients who had I-Brite^® which showed light sensitivity beyond 6 months occurred in 3 patients (0.5%).  In most cases, once the eyes heal patients frequently report their eyes feel more moist and comfortable than prior to the procedure.  When you come in for your consultation, Dr. Brian will discuss the risks of the I-Brite^® procedure with you.

Mitomycin (MMC) is one of the medications used that helps control the healing process with I-Brite^®.  We conducted a review of 1023 eyes that had I-Brite^® which showed no (zero) cases of limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD). Of the 277 eyes which had a second I-Brite^® procedure (mostly for some reappearing brown spots), two eyes (from same patient) had LSCD (0.7%).  In the medical literature, there is not a single case of LSCD reported from two weeks use of MMC (which was the total MMC duration of this one LSCD patient of ours).  Therefore, having LSCD from 2 weeks of MMC use in this one patient of ours is unprecendented in the medical field.

ARE THESE EXTRA BLOOD VESSELS SOMEHOW NEEDED FOR EYE HEALTH?  No.  In fact, infants and young children have very few noticeable blood vessels.  Below are two examples from Dr. Brian's fraternal twin daughters when they were 3 years old when the below photos were taken.  Note there are virtually no visible blood vessels:
