Improvement for Arcus Senilis – Yellow Rings Around Eyes
High cholesterol can deposit around the outer edge of the corneas causing a yellow ring. Up until now there was no treatment. ColorEyes™ can dramatically improve the appearance and boost self-confidence by reducing the contrast of the yellow rings against the dark iris.
Your Color Choices

How Does it Work?
ColorEyes™ is a quick, 15-minute per eye procedure, typically painless, that instantly changes the color of your eyes.
Patients sit up from the procedure, look in the mirror, and often cry with tears of happiness and elation.
Modern keratopigmentation consists of three steps which takes about 15-20 minutes per eye:
STEP 1. The surgeon uses a femtosecond laser to make a circular channel in the cornea, just under the cornea’s surface. The surgeon can adjust the inner circular diameter which determines the size of the new pupil. The outer diameter of the channel is adjustable and usually the maximum is set by the surgeon. The laser makes a perfectly circular channel, but that’s a problem! I know you’re thinking, “Why is a perfect circle not good?” The reason is that the cornea is not a circle – it’s an oval shape. So, that’s the reason for the second step.
STEP 2. The surgeon uses an instrument to widen the outer edge of the channel to match the outer cornea diameter. This is literally where surgeon and artist intersect. It’s a very delicate part of the procedure and is highly dependent on three factors: the instruments being used, surgical skill, and surgeon artistry.
We want to extend the channel to just before the edge of the cornea for all 360 degrees of it to give a small dark rim that occurs naturally in the eyes. It’s called a limbal ring. Creating a thin limbal ring helps make the new eye color appear more natural. There is a subjective component to extending the channel and making the limbal ring (and also making it match between your two eyes) is the reason there’s an artist aspect.
The surgeon needs to see how it looks and then decide to do more extension in one area versus another area so it’s even. Much like Michelangelo deciding to sculpt more here and there to get his masterpiece “just right.” This takes most of the time as it’s painstakingly meticulous work done under the microscope. I designed specialized custom instruments for myself that help me be as accurate as possible.
We distinguish our signature ColorEyes™ keratopigmentation from other forms of keratopigmentation because of our custom method to extend the channel to create the ideal limbal ring using our custom instruments. Therefore, there’s two types of customization. ColorEyes™ compared to regular keratopigmentation is like the difference in caliber between a Rolls-Royce and a Volkswagen. Both are cars, but the quality is vastly different.
STEP 3. The surgeon places the chosen cornea ink in the channel through two small openings. A different special instrument is dipped in the ink and then slid inside the openings. This gives the most control of the ink application. Once the ink has been placed in the channel, that’s considered “one pass.” A “second pass” is applying another round of ink inside the channel. The color intensity increases with each subsequent pass. The intensity doesn’t change the color itself, but increases the brightness. Think of a dimmer switch for a light. Turning it up makes the light brighter, but it’s the same color of light. This is where a lot of experience with colors and the procedure is important since some colors require less ink for the desired effect while other colors require more passes. Again, surgeon and artist combine.
Safety of Keratopigmentation
ColorEyes™ is an elevated form of keratopigmentation which has a robust track record of over 15 years for being overall safe and effective. Of course, any procedure has some element of risk – keratopigmentation has minimal risk and is highly effective.
In studies published in medical journals there are no reports of infections nor loss of vision with modern keratopigmentation in people with healthy eyes who were properly evaluated. Light sensitivity can occur which is usually temporary. Dr. Brian has carefully reviewed the published medical studies on modern keratopigmentation and his assessment is keratopigmentation is overall safe and effective with immediate results in healthy eyes without prior LASIK.
Based on published results, colored contact lenses have a 160% higher risk of cornea ulcers/infections which can cause loss of vision compared to keratopigmentation which has zero reported cornea ulcers/infections in peer-reviewed published studies.
Several reasons can explain these differences: 1) many people buy unregulated colored contact lenses on the Internet without an eye doctor’s prescription and these lenses may be contaminated, 2) people who buy them on the Internet unknowingly abuse them because they don’t receive an eye doctor’s instructions, and 3) these lenses may not fit properly and damage the cornea making it vulnerable to infections. Reasons for no reported cornea ulcers/infections with keratopigmentation include: 1) sterile technique, 2) inks are in a solution that is antiseptic (kill bacteria), and 3) antibiotic eye drops are used for a short period after the procedures.
What ColorEyes™ is Not
There are two other very different procedures that can change eye color – iris implants and yag laser.
Iris implants carry high risk which can include glaucoma, iris damage, blindness, needing a cornea transplant, among other risks. These have never been reported with keratopigmentation.
A yag laser can change brown eyes to blue, but there are no other eye color options. Plus, the yag laser is performed every day over the course of 5 days so it requires a lot of time from your schedule (a full week). ColorEyes™ allows you freedom to choose a range of eye colors and, perhaps most importantly, it only takes about 15 minutes per eye with instant results!
Candidate Evaluation for ColorEyes™
ColorEyes™ keratopigmentation is a specialized procedure designed for individuals seeking to change their eye color. Ideal candidates are typically over the age of 18 and have healthy eyes without any significant ocular diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, or a history of eye infections. It’s crucial for potential patients to have realistic expectations and understand the aesthetic nature of this procedure. A thorough consultation with Dr. Brian is necessary to determine eligibility based on specific health criteria and personal eye history.
Cost of ColorEyes™
Since ColorEyes™ treatments are customized to the needs of the patient, prices can vary. Specific costs can be discussed in your consultation at Boxer Wachler Vision Institute. Since ColorEyes™ is an elective, aesthetic procedure, medical or vision insurance plans do not typically cover it. Financing plans are available to help you afford the cost of care.
Longevity and Maintenance of ColorEyes™
The results of ColorEyes™ are designed to be permanent, with no need for repeated treatments. However, some patients might experience slight fading or changes in the intensity of the color over time, which can be addressed in follow-up visits. Maintenance procedures are rarely needed but can be performed for those who desire adjustments or enhancements years later. Patients should be aware of the long-term commitment they are making with such a permanent alteration to their appearance.
Comparison with Other Cosmetic Eye Procedures
ColorEyes™ offers a unique approach compared to other methods like iris implants or YAG laser treatments. Unlike iris implants, which involve placing a synthetic iris and have a higher risk of complications such as glaucoma or cataract formation, ColorEyes™ modifies the natural pigment of the iris using a minimally invasive laser technique. This reduces potential risks and avoids the foreign body response elicited by implants. YAG laser treatments, often used for medical indications, do not change eye color but might unintentionally affect it during the procedure.
Recovery Process and Aftercare
Recovery from ColorEyes™ typically involves minimal discomfort and a quick return to daily activities. You may experience mild irritation and sensitivity to light initially. Follow recovery guidelines, which advise avoiding strenuous activities and direct sunlight exposure for the first few days post-procedure. Full stabilization of the eye color can take several weeks, during which time you should follow all prescribed treatments and attend follow-up visits to ensure proper healing.
What Are the Psychological Benefits of Changing Eye Color?
Changing eye color through procedures like ColorEyes™ can significantly impact self-perception and interpersonal interactions. Many individuals see their eye color as integral to their identity and choose to change it for self-expression or to enhance alignment between their inner self and outward appearance. This alteration can boost self-esteem and confidence, particularly if the new eye color resonates with cultural or familial significance.
How to Choose the Right Eye Color for Your Features
Selecting a new eye color is a personal decision that should complement your natural features. Consider your skin tone, hair color, and personal style. Lighter eye colors tend to be striking on darker skin tones, while richer colors can enhance lighter complexions. Consulting with a color specialist during the decision-making process can provide insights into what shades might look best.
