What Happens to Your Eyes with Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a condition where your cornea, the clear front part of your eye, becomes thinner and gradually bulges outward into a cone-like shape. Because the cornea plays a central role in focusing light onto your retina, even small changes to its shape can significantly affect how you see.

Instead of sharp, clear images, you may notice increasing distortion, blurriness, or difficulty seeing at night. Everyday tasks such as reading, driving, or working on a computer may become harder as the condition progresses.

How Keratoconus Affects Vision Quality

As your cornea continues to thin and change shape, you may develop:

  • Blurred or distorted vision – Letters or objects may appear smeared, shadowed, or doubled.

  • Increased light sensitivity – Glare and halos around lights, especially at night, can interfere with driving or daily activities.

  • Frequent prescription changes – Glasses or contact lenses may stop working effectively as your cornea becomes more irregular.

  • Reduced visual clarity – Fine details may become harder to distinguish, even with corrective lenses.

These changes can affect not only how clearly you see but also how comfortable you feel in different lighting and daily environments.

Treatment Options That Can Protect Your Sight

Fortunately, today’s advanced treatments can help slow or stop keratoconus progression and preserve your vision quality. Options may include:

  • Specialty contact lenses – Custom lenses designed to fit the irregular cornea can restore clearer vision.

  • Holcomb C3-R – A non-invasive treatment that strengthens corneal tissue to prevent further thinning and bulging invented by Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler and has an Olympic Gold medal behind it.

  • Other advanced procedures – Intacs, CK and Visian ICL are also options that were pioneered by Dr. Brian to improve quality of vison.

With the right care, many patients maintain or even improve their vision and reduce the impact of keratoconus on their quality of life.

A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT DR. BRIAN

Throughout his highly respected career, cornea specialist Dr. Brian has never wavered with his integrity and dedication to always do the best for each and every patient - even in the face of adversity and peer pressure. Case in point: when he developed a procedure to treat a cornea condition known as Keratoconus. While other eye surgeons were entrenched in performing invasive and painful cornea transplants, Dr. Brian invented a new non-invasive procedure that prevented needing cornea transplants. He was shocked by the medical establishment being unwelcoming to his innovation because, as he later found out, his new procedure was preventing other eye surgeons from performing their lucrative cornea transplants. Dr. Brian persisted, went against the grain and didn’t give up because he believed in himself and in his procedure as it was in the best interest of patients. Eventually, he crossed paths with U.S. Olympic bobsled driver Steven Holcomb who had Keratoconus and became so depressed over it that he tried to commit suicide. Luckily, he survived. The United States Olympic team and his coaches found Dr. Brian and sent Steven to see him. Dr. Brian restored his vision to 20/20 which enabled Steven later win a historic Olympic gold medal for United States in bobsled - the first in 62 years! As a result, Dr. Brian was later invited to give a prestigious TEDx talk about his integrity and dedication to patients. You can watch his moving and inspiring TEDx talk here.
