Why Patients Are Getting Cataract Surgery Younger Than Before

Cataract Surgery Age Los Angeles

The age at which patients undergo cataract surgery is getting younger than it used to be. In the past, cataract surgery was primarily performed on people in their 70s and 80s, but Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, “The Surgeon’s Surgeon,” has seen a steady rise in cataract patients aged 69 and younger. Read on to better understand why so many patients have decided to have cataract surgery earlier in life.

Cataracts Get Worse with Time

With some medical ailments, patients can take a wait-and-see approach to decide whether treatment is necessary. However, with cataracts, there is no mystery: the cataracts will continue to worsen with each passing year. Knowing that their vision will only get hazier, patients may decide to stop trying to tolerate it in the meantime and have the surgery performed earlier. After all, since cataracts cannot return on eyes with an artificial lens, there is no such thing as getting cataract surgery “too soon.”

Premium Lenses Are a Benefit

Traditionally, cataract patients usually needed to wear prescription eyewear to help them see well at certain distances. However, modern Trifocal IOLs (intraocular lenses) allow patients to see objects near, far, and in between without needing glasses. Dr. Brian has a variety of premium lenses available, including the PanOptix lens, a trifocal IOL by AcrySof that is considered the best by leading ophthalmologists.

Less Downtime

Recovery time depends significantly on the patient’s healing abilities. On average, younger eyes are more resilient to surgery. The fact that patients in their 60s are more likely to have their full vision return sooner after cataract surgery — and therefore resume their normal life and activities — is another incentive to avoid postponing cataract surgery.

Surgery Has Never Been Safer

In the past, some patients have waited until cataract surgery was absolutely necessary out of concern over potential risks and complications. Fortunately, safety standards have never been higher, which is why cataract surgery is one of the most performed surgeries in the United States. Dr. Brian is an accomplished ophthalmologist with state-of-the-art equipment, which allows him to perform cataract surgery at an elite level. His patients can feel confident they are receiving top-notch care.

A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT DR. BRIAN

Throughout his highly respected career, cornea specialist Dr. Brian has never wavered with his integrity and dedication to always do the best for each and every patient - even in the face of adversity and peer pressure. Case in point: when he developed a procedure to treat a cornea condition known as Keratoconus. While other eye surgeons were entrenched in performing invasive and painful cornea transplants, Dr. Brian invented a new non-invasive procedure that prevented needing cornea transplants. He was shocked by the medical establishment being unwelcoming to his innovation because, as he later found out, his new procedure was preventing other eye surgeons from performing their lucrative cornea transplants. Dr. Brian persisted, went against the grain and didn’t give up because he believed in himself and in his procedure as it was in the best interest of patients. Eventually, he crossed paths with U.S. Olympic bobsled driver Steven Holcomb who had Keratoconus and became so depressed over it that he tried to commit suicide. Luckily, he survived. The United States Olympic team and his coaches found Dr. Brian and sent Steven to see him. Dr. Brian restored his vision to 20/20 which enabled Steven later win a historic Olympic gold medal for United States in bobsled - the first in 62 years! As a result, Dr. Brian was later invited to give a prestigious TEDx talk about his integrity and dedication to patients. You can watch his moving and inspiring TEDx talk here.
