Are Eye Drops Enough to Combat Dry Eyes?

Dry Eyes Beverly Hills

When your eyes feel gritty, irritated, or persistently dry, reaching for eye drops might seem like the easiest solution. These over-the-counter remedies may offer quick relief, but are they truly addressing the root cause of your discomfort? If you’ve been struggling with dry eye symptoms that just won’t quit, it may be time to consider whether eye drops alone are enough—or if more comprehensive care could bring you lasting relief.

Understanding What Causes Dry Eyes

Dry eyes can result from a variety of underlying issues. You might experience dryness due to age-related tear production changes, screen time, certain medications, hormonal shifts, or environmental factors like air conditioning and wind. In some cases, dry eyes may stem from a more complex condition like Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, where oil-producing glands become clogged or underactive.

When you use eye drops, you’re typically adding moisture to the eye’s surface, which can soothe irritation temporarily. However, this approach doesn’t always correct the source of the problem. If your tears evaporate too quickly or lack essential oils, the underlying imbalance may still exist.

Limitations of Over-the-Counter Eye Drops

While artificial tears can be part of your routine, they might not work for everyone. Some products contain preservatives that could irritate your eyes with frequent use. Additionally, relying solely on drops may mask your symptoms instead of improving the condition itself.

If you find yourself reaching for drops multiple times a day without consistent relief, this may be a sign that your eyes need more personalized care. It’s important to understand that persistent dry eye symptoms may require evaluation by an eye care professional to uncover what’s truly going on.

Advanced Dry Eye Treatments You May Consider

At Dr. Brian’s Beverly Hills practice, you can explore a range of dry eye treatments that go beyond what standard eye drops offer. Depending on your specific needs, options may include LipiFlow, which uses gentle thermal pulsation to unblock oil glands, or light therapy to reduce inflammation and improve tear quality. Punctal plugs may also be considered to help retain your natural tears longer.

These solutions are typically customized after a detailed examination of your eyes. You won’t receive a one-size-fits-all answer—your treatment may be designed around what’s most effective for the root cause of your dryness. That’s why working with a knowledgeable specialist could be the key to finally feeling real relief.

When Should You Seek Help?

If you’ve been using drops for weeks or months without improvement, your eyes may be signaling something more serious. Don’t wait for symptoms like burning, excessive tearing, blurred vision, or eye fatigue to get worse. Seeking professional care early can help you avoid complications and preserve your visual comfort.

A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT DR. BRIAN

Throughout his highly respected career, cornea specialist Dr. Brian has never wavered with his integrity and dedication to always do the best for each and every patient - even in the face of adversity and peer pressure. Case in point: when he developed a procedure to treat a cornea condition known as Keratoconus. While other eye surgeons were entrenched in performing invasive and painful cornea transplants, Dr. Brian invented a new non-invasive procedure that prevented needing cornea transplants. He was shocked by the medical establishment being unwelcoming to his innovation because, as he later found out, his new procedure was preventing other eye surgeons from performing their lucrative cornea transplants. Dr. Brian persisted, went against the grain and didn’t give up because he believed in himself and in his procedure as it was in the best interest of patients. Eventually, he crossed paths with U.S. Olympic bobsled driver Steven Holcomb who had Keratoconus and became so depressed over it that he tried to commit suicide. Luckily, he survived. The United States Olympic team and his coaches found Dr. Brian and sent Steven to see him. Dr. Brian restored his vision to 20/20 which enabled Steven later win a historic Olympic gold medal for United States in bobsled - the first in 62 years! As a result, Dr. Brian was later invited to give a prestigious TEDx talk about his integrity and dedication to patients. You can watch his moving and inspiring TEDx talk here.
