Exploring the Visian ICL During Baseball Season

With Baseball season starting there are several worries related to the eyes. The largest amount of sports related injuries each year are due to baseball. And 90% of eye related injuries are preventable. The largest number of eye related injuries in baseball are from the position of Batter. Why? The batters vision needs to be good both near and at a distance to hit the ball right. Those with near vision impairment can get hit by the ball before even realizing it’s the ball.

Almost 2/3rds of the eye related injury victims are between the ages of 15-25. There are several professional athletes that still struggle with vision problems and go unchecked each year. The truth is most people feel that if they have a procedure done they won’t be able to play.

The most common eye related injuries each year are:

 Detached Retina’s
 Corneal Lacerations
 Hemorrhages
 Even loss of eye

Most of these injuries are due to direct ocular contact with the ball. While baseball is a sport we love we must protect ourselves at all times. Several athletes have neglected their vision and have waited for treatment until it was almost a necessity to make it through the day. St. Louis Cardinals Aaron Luna recently had vision correction surgery to improve his vision. The Visian ICL is atiny lens implant placed in the eye to improve your natural lens vision, often referred to as implantable contact lenses or internal contact lenses. With the Visian ICL in some cases, you can experience life without contact lenses or glasses. Even more, these lenses are maintenance free lens that you can not even feel once they are in place.

Aaron remembers what it was like before the Visian ICL and now is grateful he had the procedure done. The Visian ICL takes only about 30 minutes per eye and its recovery time is generally 1 week. You should ask your eye care professional about the Visian ICL it can benefit you in your next Baseball season!

Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler is a specialist for the Visian ICL procedure.

A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT DR. BRIAN

Throughout his highly respected career, cornea specialist Dr. Brian has never wavered with his integrity and dedication to always do the best for each and every patient - even in the face of adversity and peer pressure. Case in point: when he developed a procedure to treat a cornea condition known as Keratoconus. While other eye surgeons were entrenched in performing invasive and painful cornea transplants, Dr. Brian invented a new non-invasive procedure that prevented needing cornea transplants. He was shocked by the medical establishment being unwelcoming to his innovation because, as he later found out, his new procedure was preventing other eye surgeons from performing their lucrative cornea transplants. Dr. Brian persisted, went against the grain and didn’t give up because he believed in himself and in his procedure as it was in the best interest of patients. Eventually, he crossed paths with U.S. Olympic bobsled driver Steven Holcomb who had Keratoconus and became so depressed over it that he tried to commit suicide. Luckily, he survived. The United States Olympic team and his coaches found Dr. Brian and sent Steven to see him. Dr. Brian restored his vision to 20/20 which enabled Steven later win a historic Olympic gold medal for United States in bobsled - the first in 62 years! As a result, Dr. Brian was later invited to give a prestigious TEDx talk about his integrity and dedication to patients. You can watch his moving and inspiring TEDx talk here.
